Artio and the Great Bear

Spring equinox 2014: 4.57pm March 20th UTC

This print has manifested from a recent gifted dream. It speaks of the Bear emerging from the cave of hibernation at the time of Spring. The bear is  a symbol for the  Nigredo of prime matter in Alchemy. She is a great power of the unconscious mind and the great sleep dreamer teacher. Artio was a Celtic bear goddess Artio derives from a root word ‘Art‘ meaning ‘Bear’.  She was recognized from the British Isles to Greece and had a major following in Gaul in the area that is present day Switzerland. She was a fertility goddess, a goddess of plenty, and a goddess of forest animals, particularly associated with bears. Artio’s themes are spring, abundance and providence.  As Artio emerges from Her sleep, the Swiss burn an effigy of winter to literally destroy the cold with fire and light.

Spring blessings to you all x
